A woman of harmony and power, the matriarch of timeless poetic pieces that increase the capacity of the human spirit. Dr. Maya Angelou was a great wordsmith that will be missed and never forgotten.
The late great Dr. Angelou was a poet, civil rights leader, actress, dancer and professor. Dr. Angelou's poetry speaks life to me during times of frustration, comfort during times of crisis and challenges me to "be a rainbow in someone else's cloud". It was such an honor to have touched her hand and be invigorated by her words.
I first heard her speak at my commencement at Towson University in 1996. Since then I have been a fan of Mrs. Angelou's art; she was an amazing human being with a legacy that will live forever. A true master of metaphors, using words to compose motivating melodies and spiritual harmony. Dr. Angelou earned more than 30 honorary doctorates for her life's work as well as the following awards for her achievements: Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010) · Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album (2002) · Spingarn Medal (1994) · Marian Anderson Award (2008) · Langston Hughes Medal (1991).
