April 16th marks Emancipation Day in Washington DC
On April 16, 1862, then President Abraham Lincoln signed the compensated emanicipation act which set free 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia nine months before President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Emancipation day is a holiday in Washington DC therefore, schools, government offices and post office are closed.

Cherry Blossom Festival- DC National Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off spring goes from March 20 to April 13, 2014. Celebrating the beauty of thousands of fluffy pink blooms. This is an annual celebration marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Caiso SteelBand covered calypso, reggae and pop hits with island flavor at the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival on April 5th thanks to Ashleigh Chevalier and Gravatt Entertainment. As bands played on several stages face painting, jewelery making and other family activities were happening. Washington, DC is know for partisan politics, time consuming traffic jams, mumbo sauce, national monuments and smithsonian musuems. But did you know that each spring 1.5 million people flock to the national mall in downtown DC to view the cherry blossom trees along the north bank of the tidal basin in West Potomac park.
National Cherry Blossom festival kicks off spring in DC and Caiso Steelband are honored to be apart of the festival. Yes ma, I finally made it in the Cherry Blossom festival. Caiso has been apart of wedding celebrations, corporate and community events but this is the first time we will perform at an official cherry blossom festival event.
