Often times it can be daunting to figure out what gift to give someone. On Valentine's Day it can be very intimidating. How are you suppose to come up with a gift that will represent your love for someone? How can a gift ever express it enough or be enough? Yet we try every year and hope with fingers crossed that it will be just perfect.
In a recent survey of women concerning Valentine's Day gifts most said they just want to feel appreciated. Men say they would like the same. So put it in perspective that the gift should portray appreciation and you can better choose your gift.
For women that could mean a romantic dinner, jewelry representing love such as a heart necklace, and even a play list of songs that would represent your journey of love together. The gift should say "I love you, I appreciate you, and I get you" said one survey responder.
Don't be pulled toward highly decorated last minute gifts seen at retailers hoping to grab your money at the benefit of fancy wrappings. What is inside does matter. It would be better to show you actually spent time to get your gift together such as pre-purchased movie tickets or a dinner reservation. It shows it wasn't a last minute thought.
For men, it could mean tickets to a sporting event later in the week, a certificate for a round of golf, or anything that shows you know how they like to play - afterall you are the one that can still understand the man you love has a boy's heart when it comes to games and fun!
Don't forget the music either. A request by a local DJ to play "your song" while you enjoy dinner together at home or a new download of love songs that mark your relationship through the years. The music will last long after the meal is over, the movie has ended, and the day is over. The music will bring back the feelings of years past, rekindle the butterfly in the stomach, and be remembered next week and next month when played again. Nothing can say "I love you" like music and beautiful lyrics. Either choose one you know or perhaps you might want to give a try at writing your own... that will for sure be remembered days ahead and no matter what her friends received - a song just for her, written by you, is definitely a winner. Even if it never wins a Grammy!
If you are still in need of an idea then take a moment to watch this video by Nick Dietz - it is sure to give you a great idea and a smile! Happy Valentine's Day!
Single on Valentine’s Day? Don't let that stop you from having fun.
You've got to love yourself before you can love somebody else. So if
you've got the Valentine's blues here's what you do. So checkout these 7
fun activities for singles:
#7 Go to the Spa: Make an appointment at a spa to get facials or massages on Valentine's
Day. A great massage would be a wonderful way to get your mind off of
things, and a facial will make you glow the next day.
#6 Have a Nice Dinner.
This could be part of going out. You could treat yourself to a nice dinner or you could cook yourself something you enjoy.
#5 Movie night. Again, get all your single friends together and
have a fun movie night. You can rent movies or watch movies you already
have. I wouldn't suggest watching romantic comedies; perhaps have a scary movie night or watch adventure films.
#4 Roadtrip Get out & about and explore.
If it’s warm enough, roll the windows down (or put the top down), crank
the tunes, and go wherever the road leads you. You have no destination.
You have no obligations today. You are free to roam the great outdoors
and just enjoy the day… alone. (Want some extra adventure?… rent your
dream vehicle (jeep or motorbike) for the day!
#3 Hang out with your other single friends. A friend and I got together one Valentine’s
Day and went to the golf range.
#2 Volunteer Valentine's Day is all about love, and nothing spreads the love faster than a little volunteer work. Find a place to volunteer or just spend some time with an elderly relative.
#1 Pamper Yourself: No Self Pity. No matter what! Don't feel sorry for yourself, that's not cool. Do something different like: take a yoga class, have a fondue party, walk a foster puppy, visit an animal shelter... whatever you do have fun.

It is the busiest day for traveling across the US as
families and friends gather to celebrate Thanksgiving. The day brings about everything from eating
traditional favorites, watching football games, and gearing up for the many
Black Friday sales that will get people into savings frenzies. It is also the beginning of the holiday
season for releasing Holiday themed music CDs and some of the most anticipated
movie releases of the year.
Here is a quick list to give you an insider look on all
things Thanksgiving:
For many the holiday just wouldn’t be the same
without a viewing of “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” – you will be able to
rekindle the joys of your childhood or share it with the little ones gathered
in your home by tuning into ABC tonight 8/7 and again on Thanksgiving Day 8/7.
For some great Thanksgiving movies that will be
playing on TV, rented, or streamed to your digital device of TV consider: “Planes,
Trains, and Automobiles”, “Pieces of April”, Disney’s “Pocahontas”, and “Home
for the Holidays”
“Life of Pi” is open in theaters across the US
today and the family themed movie “Rise of the Guardians”. “Lincoln” is also playing nationwide and is
considered an Academy Award contender.
Because many people attend movies over the Thanksgiving weekend it is
suggested to buy tickets online to make sure you get in to the movies you want
to attend.
It is estimated that 43.6 million people will
travel today so plan for plenty of time to get to where you are going and be
alert and safe on the road.
If camping out and fighting the crowds is not
your thing then don’t fret about missing great deals on potential Christmas
gifts. Cyber Monday, the Monday
following Black Friday is considered the best day to get special deals
online.
Of course little else can signal it is Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season is in gear than the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Parade will have behind the scene features on many cable shows with the Parade itself covered live on CBS and NBC. This is the 86th year of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and it will begin at 9AM.
CAISO wishes you and yours a very
Happy Thanksgiving and want to remind you to remember those less fortunate and
alone this holiday and the whole holiday season. Please check on those that may need a kind
word, help and assistance, and perhaps a place at your table.
If you are living on the east coast then no doubt you have been
hearing about Hurricane Sandy. This
storm is being called “unprecedented” and a “monster of a storm” by
professional meteorologists. It could
bring damaging winds that could cripple the most population dense area of the
United States and will include over a foot of snow for some areas as the
collected moisture hits cold air.
While the weekend and beginning of the week is due to bring
Sandy ashore, the hurricane is today causing trouble for the east coast of
Florida despite being offshore.
Meteorologist are warning those in the Washington, DC, Maryland,
Virginia, areas and states extending upward into the northern New England area
to get ready NOW. From the Carolinas to
Canada the danger from Hurricane Sandy is a real threat.
Don’t wait until the hurricane is upon you or it may be too
late for you may lose power or be unable to leave the area if you plan to do so
because of flooding or traffic jams.
Waiting until Hurricane Sandy is upon us is too late. The day to prepare is TODAY!
Here are some helpful tips and links to help you prepare for
Hurricane Sandy:
Stay tuned to local weather reports and news
conferences from local authorities.
Routinely gather information from the national
weather authorities such as The Weather Channel where massive amounts of
information can be had both through television, the Internet, over social media
and through mobile phone text alerts. They
have live satellite feed, pictures, alerts, and the latest updates that could
be more detailed than you could receive from some local newscasts.
Refill prescription medicine for family members
and pets.
Purchase bottled water, canned foods, non-perishables,
and pet foods. Don’t forget to add in
the water need of your pets.
Fill up your bathtubs with water so that you can
use the water to flush toilets or for other use so you can use bottled water
for drinking.
If you have pets make sure you have collars on
all of them with identifying information. Put phone numbers versus addresses on
the tags on each line that you can for you want to be contacted even if someone
cannot get to your home. Putting reward if found on one line of a tag can help
get your pet home. Most pet stores have
tag making machines.
If you live in areas that could be evacuated
then make sure you have all your pet’s medical records, food, leashes, and
crates or carriers ready for evacuation.
NEVER leave your pets behind if you have to evacuate and don’t leave
them contained in a backyard or tied up.
If you want to be assured your pet is cared for then contact a boarding
facility outside of the threat zone and drive your pet to the facility. Sometimes neighbors will share the ride to
help get pets into a safe area while their families await the storms.
Gather a list of phone numbers you may need in
an emergency and put them into your mobile phone now including the numbers of
your nearby neighbors, gas leak reporting, emergency personnel, veterinarians,
doctors, hospitals, insurance agents and hotel reservation numbers in case you have to evacuate
quickly.
Have backup battery recharging options in the
case of losing electricity in your home.
Inform everyone that may contact you to check
you are OK that if mobile phone towers are compromised that texting may be
possible when calls are not and to try texting if they cannot reach you by
phone.
Have bags packed with clothes, important papers,
etc. ready in case of an evacuation.
Batteries, radios, flashlights, blankets, and
bleach should be on hand. Never use
candles in the event damaging winds do damage in your area for gas leaks could
occur.
If possible put important items out of reach of
possible flooding levels.
Load up on items to keep children occupied such
as games, books, and toys in case you lose electricity.
Get cash to have on hand as well as filling up
your gas tank.
Don’t take chances and make sure you are prepared for
Hurricane Sandy. Be safe everyone! Check our next week’s blog post on Unique and
Special Wedding Venues in the DMV area.
As everyone is quite aware, members of the CAISO band are traveling and performing in Kosovo on a Military Goodwill Tour. Michael King, Jr. has been very vocal in explaining how much this trip means to him due to the fact that his father was a Vietnam Veteran and Bronze Star recipient.
It is with great sadness that we pass along the news that Michael's father, Michael "Mickey" King, Sr. passed away on September 1, 2012 at the Veterans Nursing Home, Charlotte Hall, MD. Mickey was also a steeldrum player and no doubt would be very proud of the current tour of the CAISO Band and his son, Mike.
We express our deepest sympathies to fellow band member Michael, Jr., the entire family, friends and the Steelpan Community in the loss of this special military hero and man.

Giving back to your community can be one of the best “life
enhancing” moments. It can spark
something deep within you that can’t be explained. Once you do it you just have to do it again
and again. That is why there are people
that dedicate their lives to giving by working in organizations that simply
serve others. They give and the feeling
is worth doing it again and again. You
don’t have to dedicate your career to a cause to make a difference. Doing a little can make a large impact. Giving back by offering a few hours of your
time can add up to a lot good.
I have heard people remark that they have nothing to give,
no special skills, no money, no time, and the list goes on. A quote by Sir Winston Churchill sums up the
act of giving back. He said, “We make a
living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
I highly recommend that a person give back at least once a
month. Surely everyone can give an hour
or two once a month. If you watch at
least 2 hours of TV a week then you can give 2 hours a month to giving back to
your community by supporting some cause.
You will get much more from those 2 hours of giving than you will by
watching TV. I promise.
The best way to start is to either consider what you are
passionate about or to consider what you are good at as far as talent, skills,
hobbies, or activities. If you believe
strongly about environmental causes or children then look around and consider
where help is needed. Start by offering
to help plant tree seedlings in your neighborhood park or perhaps you could
offer to read children’s books at your local library for children’s hour or at
a local community center. Organize a
group of people to clean up and revitalize a neighborhood park by getting
volunteers and donated plants, flowers, signage, paint, and other needs.
Teach someone to play an instrument, to paint a picture, to use
a computer, or to read. You could also
play an instrument or get together a band for a performance for disabled Veterans,
paint a mural and spruce up a neighborhood community center, teach someone to
use a computer so they can get employment or do their resume, or read to
someone in a nursing home or hospital.
There is much all of us can do.
With the approaching tropical storm Isaac, which will likely
be a hurricane soon, you could offer to give your time to a shelter that will
be caring for misplaced pets. Contact a
local rescue group on http://www.petfinder.com and offer to foster an animal
until it is adopted so that they can have room to take in a misplaced animal
from the storm. If you can’t foster then
gather items from neighbors and donate them to a local shelter or rescue
group. They can use empty shoe boxes for
litter boxes, blankets to keep sad and homeless animals off of cold concrete in
shelters, and gently used collars to make animals look more adoptable. Food and cleaning supplies are always needed. Gather all those sample shampoos and conditioners
from motels you collected and the free toothbrushes from your dentist and give
them to a homeless shelter. They can
also use gently used toys to give to children that come in with families
looking for help.
Can you sew? How
about sewing teddy bears or dolls to give to children that take rides in
ambulances? Sew sock toys for dogs to
play with at shelters, catnip toys for cats, slings for ferrets, and beds for
the elderly homeless animals to make them comfortable. Sew baby blankets and give them to the
Salvation Army and the Red Cross to share when items are needed for families in
need.
Do you have a digital camera? Offer to take pictures of animals at the
shelter that are available for adoption so they can be put on the Internet and
increase their chances of being adopted.
Team up with some beauty professionals and give makeovers to nursing
home residents and take their picture to share with family members and give
them a special day. Offer to take
pictures on location of children in your community that are available for
adoption. Capturing a special smile or
moment could catch the eye and heart of an adoptive family.
Use your social media accounts to spread the word for
organizations. Perhaps your Tweet about
how to text a $10 donation to the Red Cross could raise money to help those
impacted by Isaac or other disasters.
You can follow them at @RedCross and just by re-tweeting their tweets on
donation information or storm preparedness you help spread the word of how to
help. You can donate a tweet by going to
the Web site http://justcoz.org/ and find a
cause you believe in by browsing through the list. You connect your account and once a day a
tweet will go out from your account sharing information about that cause. You do nothing but sign up and you share
information each and every day. Perhaps
then you can tell others about JustCoz and the goodness spreads. Give two hours a month Tweeting or posting on
Facebook about causes that need help.
Giving back can make a difference and it ripples. It spreads outward and the impact is far
reaching. You take your dog on a therapy
visit and a caretaker smiles and pets the dog.
Throughout the day they are happier, less stressed and are more giving with
the residents or patients. Meanwhile you
and your dog visit the patients and they smile and are happier and more
relaxed. Visitors at the hospital or
nursing home enjoy meeting the dog and leave their visit with a smile and what
may have been a hard thing to do was much more pleasant because you brought
your dog. Your dog gets lots of petting
and attention and you get to spend some quality time with your dog and share
your friendship with others. You then
return home and realize you just spent two hours the best way possible and life
is good. The ripple goes on and on and
on. It just took action on your part to
start the ripple.
CAISO has always had members ready to give when we can and
where we are needed. It’s one of the
best parts about this Band. The
opportunity to play and share our music with Veterans has always been something
special to all of us.
We are actually days away from getting to give back to those
that serve and protect our country. The
Band will be leaving to Kosovo on a Goodwill Tour organized and made possible
by Nicole Burdett of Pro Sports MVP and the USO. It will be a career moment for all of us as
we look out at the audience and consider it actually a gift not for them but
for us to be there and have the opportunity to give back. We are so excited to perform in this
capacity.
Giving back is important.
I can’t recommend it enough. It
will change your life. It will lift
you. Just give a little if that is all
you have. Even a small rock can make a
large and far reaching ripple in the water.
Share your ideas for how to give back or what it has meant
to you to share of yourself to a cause.
We’d love to hear from you and spread the energy.
It may not be summer officially yet but the weather outside says differently. The last few weeks have felt like we are in a deep set heat wave right in the middle of summer 2012. Records for high temperatures have been broken all over the United States and unfortunately the heat has also been responsible for many deaths.
Here in DC and in outlying areas there are many that have been without electricity due to bad storms that rolled through a week ago. The same can be said for other areas and the heat for those people is more unbearable because there is no access to air conditioning or even fans to blow the air around and offer relief.
If you find yourself trying to stay cool this summer there are some things you can do to make life a bit more bearable in the heat. Below are some tips for staying cool:
Turn on only the lights that are needed in the house. Light bulbs and other appliances actually put off heat and it is important to limit the heat that is being generated in the house.
Put small fans in strategic places to keep air flowing from room to room. Open windows if you can and feel safe enough to do so at night when the air is cooler. Set the fans to move the air throughout the house.
Pull drapes and curtains shut as much as possible during the day to block out the sun’s rays.
Dress in loose clothing.
If you are outside dress in loose clothing that is light colored
Keep your hair up and off of your neck so your body can let heat escape easier from your skin.
Drink cool drinks frequently.
Keep lotions in the fridge for applying on to your skin, especially aloe vera lotions and gels which will offer an extended relief to the skin if it has been kept in the refrigerator.
Make small zip lock baggies with ice or use gel icepacks to hold on your wrists. The blood in your wrist is close to the skin and the ice will cool down your blood and move it throughout your body lowering your temperature.
Put your slippers or summer sandals in gallon zip lock baggies and put them in the freezer while you sleep. In the heat of the day when you need to cool off take them out and put them on for relief that will last for quite a while.
Getting dressed into work clothes in a warm house can make the day difficult as you battle the heat and try to keep cool. Keeping your underclothes in the refrigerator and putting them on right before you get dressed will offer you just enough time to get dressed comfortably and leave the house without getting drenched from your own sweat. You can do the same for your night clothes to make going to sleep more comfortable but restrict it to the refrigerator because putting them in the freezer makes clothes stiff and un-wearable.
A bandana put into the refrigerator and tied around the neck while getting dressed or doing a task in the house can help keep the body temperature down. If you have several then you can keep rotating them from the body to the wash to the fridge and keep a supply on hand for every day.
Only run the dryer during the evening when the outdoor temperature is cooler. Refrain as much as possible from cooking on the stove or in the oven during the day.
Putting a bowl of ice in front of a fan can lower the room temperature by several degrees.
Wipe off your skin frequently with cool cloths to help evaporate heat off of the body.
Avoid covering your head while inside so heat can escape your head.
Use a squirt bottle set on the mist setting to mist ice cold water on your body, face, and hair.
For those with pets it is important to remember that dogs and cats do not have sweat glands on their skin like humans and must cool off by panting. They also stay cool by releasing heat from their ears and paws. You can help them by putting a fan somewhere on the floor to move air where they rest and sleep, keeping their water changed several times in the day and adding ice to it, and by wiping off their stomachs, ear flaps, noses, and paws with a cool cloth occasionally. Pets outdoors can quickly be overcome by the heat as their body temperatures are hotter than humans and they are wearing fur coats. Keeping them off of hot surfaces is very important. Shade, LOTS of fresh cool water, and moving air to help them cool off is vital. Pet food will go rancid quickly in the heat so food should be changed out every 5-6 hours if it is left out in the heat. Feed them in the coolest parts of the day and there will be less waste. Nothing could be more helpful however than a kiddie pool filled with fresh water and floating ice set in the shade for them to take a dip in when they want to do so.
The elderly are very prone to illness and death related to extreme heat. They often are afraid to leave their windows open and will suffer the heat rather than expose their home to a possible intruder. If you have an elderly person living near you, please check on them or report to the authorities that they may need to be looked in on and perhaps you can help them get a donation for an air conditioner through a charity organization. Many churches and charities donate air conditioners and help secure windows to keep the units installed and the home safe from intruders at the same time. There are also charities to help them pay the extra costs to their electric bill and many times the electric company itself will help.
Consider donating time to help others when the heat is high and your assistance will be well received and worthwhile as you will quickly see your efforts making a major difference for someone in need. Just offering to give someone a ride to a shelter that is offering those that need relief from the heat can be the help another person needs.
Stay cool, think of others that may not be as fortunate as you to have a cool place to live and sleep and consider what you could do to help them, care for the animals that are dependent on humans for their comfort, and even offer the wild birds and small animals fresh water in feeders to help them along. Don’t miss the opportunity to look in on your neighbors and those you know that are elderly to make sure they are all doing fine in the heat.
Remember it isn’t summer yet – we have many more warm days ahead of us! If you have some tips on how to keep cool please share them with us and others in the comments section. Stay cool!

Call off the search, I have found The Greatest TV Clip of All Time. In Animal Planet's "My Extreme Animal Phobia," badass muscular Marvin, adorned with tattooed sleeves and ink on his face and neck, breaks down into tears at the sight of puppies (video below via Buzzfeed). Marvin should listen to CAISO SteelBand music and relax a little. Hope that helps.
In order to face his fear, Marvin has to pet a pit bull puppy that's about 4 months old. And every time I started to feel bad about him having a paralyzing deep-seated phobia, the camera cut to the little puppy wagging its tail and I couldn't help but laugh. There should be some sort of prerequisite for getting a neck tattoo. "I'm sorry, sir, but before I can give you this fearsome permanent mark that will limit your jobs to bouncer and speed-metal bassist, I have to ensure that you're not terrified of cuddly puppies. It's the law."
