2011 Year in Review: Top 10 Blog posts by Caiso SteelDrum Band

This has been a fantastic year for CAISO SteelBand; we owe a big thanks to our Clients and FaceBook Fans for making that happen.  Even though we have been in existance for 32 years; in 2011 we experienced some firsts such as performing at the popular Herbs, Tea & Crafts festival at the famous Montpelier Mansion as well as participating in the @DCJazzfest 2011 (click link to see the video and read about our experience @DCJazzfest).  We haved been honored to have a residency at Clyde's of Chevy Chase  during 2011.

 We had a write up in the Washington Post's Going Out Guide in April.

We also performed Fairfax county Summer Concert Series in Park Aug 2011.

MLK family celebrates their 1st Christmas without Dr. King in 1968

 

With the dismal reports on unemployment and poverty levels, this holiday season is sure to be a tough one for many families. But no struggle compares to that of a family grieving over a lost love one during the holidays.

Adorable Orphaned Polar Bear Cub (video) | Care2 Healthy Living

Siku, a furball of a polar bear, was born last month at the Scandinavian Wildlife Park in Denmark.  However, video cameras inside the bears’ den revealed that little Siku was not getting enough milk, so the wildlife park staff intervened and removed Siku from his mother. Without this intervention, Siku would have likely perished.

CAISO SteelBand Volunteers for Charlotte Hall Military Veterans Home

CAISO has long been dedicated to giving back to the community and doing outreach events to bring their music and the joy that accompanies their tunes to others.  It is with great enthusiasm that on December 11 the CAISO band played for Military Vets that served our country and their families and guests at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte, Maryland. 

There exists a special connection between the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and the CAISO band as Michael King, Sr. is a resident.  Mr. King is the father of present band member pannist and booking manager Michael King, Jr.

CAISO Books Special Gig to Give Back to Those Who Served at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home

CAISO has long been dedicated to giving back to the community and doing outreach events to bring their music and the joy that accompanies their tunes to others.  It is with great enthusiasm that on December 11 the CAISO band will be playing for and honoring those who honorably served our country and their families and guests at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte, Maryland.  There exists a special connection between the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and the CAISO band as Michael King, Sr. is a resident.  Mr. King is the father of present band member pannist and booking manager Michael King, Jr.

Charlotte Hall Veterans Home provides Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing long-term care needs to Maryland resident Veterans and their eligible spouses.  The Home is a managed facility under the care of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs.  Being able to play and perform for the residents, staff, and their guests on December 11 is something that the band members are very excited about doing as they all have a personal dedication to giving back.  Combining the Holiday Season, giving back to the community, and performing at Charlotte Hall all in one special evening is an important “gig” on the band’s calendar.  They are happy to give of their time and talent to bring some of their signature “joy induced” music to everyone attending the event and were delighted to include this performance into their schedule and hope to participate in another event there again in the future.

Seventy years ago, a Japanese air and naval assault on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii claimed 2,390 American lives and propelled the U.S. into World War II. There are many Commemorations taking place today around the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the attack, as well as memorials for servicemen who survived the attacks but whom, after their recent deaths, wanted their remains placed at Pearl Harbor. Also, a new exhibit about the attacks is opening at National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
